Hot Runner Basics

How does a hot runner work?

A hot runner is a series of heated channels inside and injection mold that deliver liquid plastic material called "melt" from the machine barrel of an injection molding machine to the cooled cavity inside the mold where the finished plastic part is formed. There are two basic types of hot runner systems, thermal gate and valve gate. Hot runners save material and production costs by eliminating the excess cold runner material found in more basic molds. Hot runners also improve the consistency and quality of the injection molding process and the plastic part. (Similar questions: What’s a hot runner? How does a hot runner system work? What is valve gating? How does a valve gate hot runner work?

Valve gating is the right solution for most advanced, fully automated injection molding operations. The increased level of process control that a valve gate hot runner offers compared to thermal gate or hot tip gate systems, not to mention cold runner molds, make it a more reliable, higher quality solution. Manufacturers turn to valve gates to replace older production methods when they need to upgrade or update their molds. Many injection molding applications are only possible using valve gate technology.

What are the most common technical issues associated with the operation of valve gate hot runners?

  1. Leakage - Every single MHS valve gate component is designed and inspected to ensure leak-free operation. Some assemblies must be manufactured to within a few microns tolerance in order to achieve the level of performance only best-in-class hot runners can offer.

  2. Wear - Our high performance hot runner systems feature ultra reliable components you won't find anywhere else, like cooling-free valve gate actuators that have no rubber o-rings and will not wear out over the life of your mold.

  3. Seizing - Valve gate molding depends on moving, mechanical parts that have to operate under extreme conditions inside the mold. Only the toughest hot runner products can perform reliably over millions of cycles.

What is the lifetime of a hot runner mold? That depends on your application, on who built your mold, how you operate it, and what type of hot runner system you have. MHS specializes in high performance hot runners, generally for molds with continuous operation of 5 to 10 years or morethat result in a great ROI.

How often your hot runner requires preventative maintenance depends on what type of system you are using. MHS has a proven track record for building extemely low maintenance hot runner systems. More mold uptime has always been our focus. This is made possible by excellent quality control and innovative design. New products like our patented Rheo-Pro® iVG™ Internal Valve Gate and cooling-free Rheo-Pro® Black Box™ Valve Gate Actuators offer more reliability than any valve gates on the market today.

Most MHS hot runner spare parts are standard, off-the-shelf items. MHS operates spare parts warehouses in Canada and in Germany. For custom spare parts and/or critical rush items, please contact MHS directly for availability, lead times, and on-site spare parts package options.

Every MHS hot runner ships in a custom built wood crate (CSA certified materials) and sealed in plastic to protect your valuable hot runner against damage, contamination, and moisture. Each system ships with a complete set of manuals, technical documentation, and assembly drawings. If you are an end user and your hot runner does not arrive directly from MHS (e.g. via tool maker) please make sure you receive this material with your mold. You can contact MHS support anytime to replace the original system documentation.

What if something goes wrong with my hot runner?

You can contact MHS directly anytime, we’re here to help. For common issues you can refer to the support material that shipped with your hot runner system and the support material available online. If you contact our support team please make sure to have your system number available. Depending on the issue you are experiencing, MHS will help you determine the best type of support to keep you up and running. Our hot runner systems are designed and constructed to be easy to service and maintain using only basic tools available in any local hardware store.

Where can I find manuals and technical documentation for my hot runner system?

Each hot runner system ships with a complete set of manuals, technical documentation, and assembly drawings. If you are an end user and your hot runner does not arrive directly from MHS (e.g. via tool maker) please make sure you receive this material with your mold. You can contact MHS support anytime to replace the original system documentation.

Is there an online portal that I can log into with my Customer ID?

Yes. Every customer has access to a dedicated online profile where project related items can be safely and conveniently stored and shared. All file transfers through the MHS cutomer portal service are encrypted using 256-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). This is the same security used by banks and many e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com. For your username and password, please contact MHS.
